Japan's health ministry confirmed 992 new cases of the coronavirus in Tokyo on Sunday, up 193 from a week ago.

The daily tally has marked the first week-on-week increase in 33 days.

Officials also reported eight deaths in the capital.

The number of seriously ill patients on ventilators or ECMO heart-lung machines was 13, down three from Saturday.

Nationwide, 14,239 new infections and 107 deaths were confirmed on Sunday.
