Hong Kong's police chief says officers fired a total of six live rounds at four locations as they clashed with protesters on Tuesday.

Police commissioner Stephen Lo held a news conference hours after an officer shot an 18-year-old student taking part in the demonstrations.

Lo said the student was conscious when he was taken to hospital, but he didn't know about his current condition.

The commissioner said the officer told the protesters to stop attacking the police but they ignored him, and he fired the round because he felt his life was in danger.

Lo said the officer's decision was legitimate.

The commissioner also said more than 180 protesters were arrested on suspicion of rioting, taking part in an illegal gathering, or arson.

The Hong Kong government says at least 74 people were injured on Tuesday and two are in critical condition.

Local media reports say one of them is the student who was shot.
