Household utensils made of toddy palm leaves available in Kyaukhtu

Some residents in Tawkhalun Village, Kyaukhtu Town in Magway Region earn their living by creating household utensils made of toddy palm leaves.

The palm craft-makers create tables and chairs by using leaves and bodies of the toddy palm tree. They sell one table for Ks. 2,500, one chair for Ks. 2000 made of palm leaves and one viss of jaggery for Ks. 800. “We cook some of the toddy juice from the toddy palm trees in a large pan to make jaggery. We also create furniture and construction materials by using toddy palm leaves.” Said U Wa Maung, a palm craft-maker from the village.

The area is endowed with abundant toddy palm forest; it is very useful trees for us and we can make our living by creating different handicrafts” he added.—IPRD
