INDIAN Ambassador to My­anmar Mr Abhay Thakur, ac­companied by Shri Sunil Muku­ndan, Managing Director of India Ports Global Ltd (IPGL), officials of the Embassy of In­dia, Yangon and the Consulate- General of India, Sittway, vis­ited Sittway in Rakhine State on 16-17 January.

 

During the visit, the Am­bassador visited the Sittway Port of the Government of India-assisted Kaladan Mul­ti-Modal Transit Transport Corridor (KMMTTC) Project. The Sittway Port has handled more than 150 vessels, carry­ing cargoes of food, agriculture commodities, medicines, fuel, vehicles, construction materi­als, machinery and equipment, since its inauguration in May 2023.

 

The ambassador also met with Rakhine State Chief Minister U Htein Lin and dis­cussed the matters related to bilateral development coop­eration, capacity building and humanitarian assistance un­der the Rakhine State Devel­opment Programmes, meeting the local needs and priorities of the people of Rakhine State.

 

The two sides agreed that the Sittway Port, an In­dia-Myanmar Friendship Project, will help strengthen coastal, regional and interna­tional connectivity, as well as enhance travel and tourism, particularly in the context of the age-old civilizational and people-to-people connection between the two countries, in coming years.

 

The ambassador highlight­ed the importance of an early return to peace and stability, which would pave the way for exploiting the full potential of the KMMTTC project.

 

He then visited the Sri Sri Moha Dev Bari Temple in Sit­tway and met with members of the Indian-origin community. He informed them of consular services for PIOs and support for strengthening their links with India. — MNA/KTZH
