Yargyi-Kalewa section of the Monywa-Yargyi-Kelawa Road that leads to a border town Tamu from Monywa in Sagaing Region is being upgraded with the financial assistance of India. Improvements for the road section have begun since May 2018.
Joint Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs of the Republic of India and his entourage visited Yargyi Village in Kani Township to inspect work progress of the road section where they were warmly welcomed by local people on 22 November. The road section is 115 mile and five furlongs long and a 40-mile long road section from Monywa to Yargyi Village, Kani Township is being upgraded through a BOT system. In addition the road section measuring 75 mile and five furlongs is being built as a two-lane tarred facility.
The project is being carried out with US$ 180 million financial aid from the government of India and is slated for completion in May 2021. Once completed, road transportation between Myanmar and India will improve, thereby facilitating better flow of commodities.—Than Htay Aung (Kani)
