Indonesia has made a plan to move its capital from Jakarta to a new location outside the island of Java.

The government made the decision at a cabinet meeting on Monday. It will select the site for the new capital and develop a basic funding plan. It estimates the relocation will take about 10 years. The government says it hopes to get private investment to help ease the financial burden.

The government plans to pick a new site outside Java, where large cities such as Jakarta and Surabaya are concentrated. Jakarta has a population of over 10 million, with more than 30 million living in the greater metropolitan area.

The government says it plans to keep the central bank and some business-related government functions in Jakarta.

The plan to relocate the capital will require approval by the parliament.
Local media say President Joko Widodo likely won another five-year term in the presidential election earlier this month.
