With a view to enabling the participation of women in people-centered projects and capacity building, a commemoration of International Women’s Day was held at “Golden Jubilee” hall of B.E.H.S in Paung, Mon State yesterday morning.
On the occasion, MP Daw Khaing Khaing Le of the State Hluttaw, chairperson of Mon State Hluttaw Women and Children Rights Committee made a speech, followed by a presentation of the background history of International Women’s Day by Deputy Staff Officer U Khin Zaw of the Township General Administration Department.
Also present at the occasion were departmental officials in the Township, ward and village administrators, members of social organizations and local people.
The day emerged when female workers in garment factories in the town of Newyork, USA staged protests demanding for reduced working hours, wage increase and the right to vote. The First International Women’s Day was on 19 March, 1911. Then, the day was universally held on March 8 starting from 1975, according historical records.— Ko Hein ( Paung)
