Iran's Foreign Ministry has condemned the US military strikes in Iraq and Syria that targeted an Iran-backed militia.

On Sunday, US Defense Department spokesperson Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement that US forces carried out strikes against five facilities of the group.

It said the strikes were in response to rocket attacks on Friday on a base in northern Iraq where US military personnel are stationed.

It said the Kataib Hezbollah has strong links with Iranian forces.

Ministry spokesperson Abbas Mousavi on Monday called the US strikes an obvious case of terrorism.

Washington earlier warned that "Iran and their proxy forces must cease their attacks on US and coalition forces."

Iran countered, saying that the US must accept consequences for its illegal act.

Analysts say Iran may boost support for the militant group, which could further heighten tension with the US.
