Iraq has called for US cooperation in removing foreign troops from the country.
Iraq's acting Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi made the call in a meeting with US ambassador to the country Matthew Tueller on Monday.
The meeting follows a resolution adopted by the Iraqi parliament on Sunday that calls for foreign troops, including those from the United States, to leave Iraq in the wake of the killing of a top Iranian military commander in the country.
The senior officer of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, General Qassem Soleimani, died in a US airstrike in the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Friday.
The US attack also killed a senior member of a Shia militant group in Iraq, fueling anger among the Iraqi people.
The Iraqi acting prime minister stressed the importance of mutual cooperation in the withdrawal of foreign troops in line with the resolution. According to the prime minister's office, he also pointed out how dangerous the current situation is and said that Iraq is doing everything it can to prevent the descent into open war.
Iraq appears to be trying to avoid possible clashes between US and Iranian forces by urging the US to act quickly.
