Irish police arrested 11 Dublin protesters for breaching coronavirus regulations, a spokesman said Thursday, as the Republic became the first EU nation to return to lockdown.

A crowd of around 100 marched through central Dublin on Thursday evening under a banner reading "End the lockdown", prompting a strong response from specialist riot police and dog units.

A spokesman said the demonstrators were informed that they were breaching Covid-19 regulations and "asked to disperse" but that 11 people were detained after "public disorder incidents" in the capital's shopping district.
