Israel says it has opened an embassy in the United Arab Emirates.

The Israeli foreign ministry said the embassy was opened in the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, on Sunday.

In a statement, Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi said his ministry "continues to lead the implementation of the peace and normalization agreements in the Gulf and to advance Israel's international status."

Also on Sunday, the UAE announced through its state media that its cabinet had approved the establishment of an embassy in Israel's commercial hub, Tel Aviv.

Under former president Donald Trump, the United States brokered agreements last year that led to the normalization of ties between Israel and four Arab nations, including the UAE and Morocco.

Israel and the UAE have been promoting bilateral economic exchanges, such as the launch of direct flights between the two countries.
