Israeli forces and a Palestinian militant group have clashed in the Gaza Strip after Israel killed one of its leaders.

Israel carried out airstrikes in the Palestinian territory on Tuesday, killing a senior commander of Islamic Jihad, which has deep ties to Iran.

The militant group has so far launched 190 rockets in retaliation. Some of them targeted Israel's Tel Aviv commercial hub.

Many of the rockets were intercepted by Israel's missile defense system.. But 22 civilians were injured when they cut themselves on pieces of glass or fell to the ground as they evacuated.

On the Palestinian side, five fighters and two civilians were killed in the Israeli airstrikes.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that the military campaign could take time and will require patience.

Netanyahu has not been able to form a governing coalition. Some local media outlets say he is trying to create a security crisis through the military campaign and establish a unified cabinet involving opposition parties to maintain his administration.
