Kyaukse, 4 March

Kyaukse Township, located in Kyaukse District, Mandalay Region, is significantly increasing the cultivation of oilseed crops like peanuts, sesame, and sunflower throughout the summer, rainy, and winter seasons. This initiative is aimed at ensuring local self-sufficiency in edible oil. So far, a total of 53,181 acres of oilseed crops have been planted for the 2024-2025 fiscal year.

The planted crops include 280 acres of rain-fed peanuts, 297 acres of winter peanuts, 4,057 acres of rain-fed sesame, 5,135 acres of winter sesame, 30,000 acres of summer sesame, 3,146 acres of rain-fed sunflower, and 10,266 acres of winter sunflower. Expected yields include 11,736 bushels of rain-fed peanuts, 9,640 bushels of winter peanuts, 51,183 bushels of rain-fed sesame, 69,363 bushels of winter sesame, 64,900 bushels of rain-fed sunflower, and 167,247 bushels of winter sunflower.

To help farmers exceed these targets, the Township Agriculture Coordination Committee for Local Edible Oil Self-Sufficiency and Farmers' Socio-Economic Development has been holding regular meetings with them. The Township Irrigation and Water Utilization Management Department, the Agriculture Department, and other relevant departments are providing comprehensive education on seed selection, planting techniques, and proper harvesting and threshing methods tailored to the region.—Thet Maung (Kyaukse)
