10 October

A CROCODILE attacked a man while  he  was  emptying  water  out of his boat near the edge of a river on 8 October at a village in Bogale Township of Ayeyawady Region.

Nay  Lin  Oo,  aged  22,  of  Hlaylonekwe Village was bitten by the crocodile and is currently undergoing treatment at a local station  hospital.  His  condition  is stable.

Crocodile   attacks   are   common  in  Myanmar’s  delta  region.  While  they  occur  each  year, there are no specific data that show how frequent they are or at what time of the year the attacks are most widespread.

The Meinmahla Kyun Wild-life Sanctuary is located at the mouth of the Ayeyawady River. The  sanctuary  attracts  visi-tors keen on viewing crocodile hatching  camps  and  conser-vation  projects  in  the  region’s  mangrove  forests,  which  have  been in a steady decline due to deforestation in the area.

Wildlife   conservation   groups  have  erected  warning  signs  to  alert  villagers  of  the  threat  posed  by  crocodiles  in  the area.
