THE Government is preparing for rehabilitation tasks to be carried out in the disaster-affected areas of the country, with holding a coordination meeting among the ministries yesterday afternoon.
Torrential rainfalls and landslides in some regions of Myanmar destroyed residential areas and caused the deadly landslides, forcing tens of thousands of people from their homes to temporary rescue camps.
Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Win Myat Aye, as the Chairman of Coordinating Body for Rehabilitating Disaster-Affected Region, presided over the meeting, with suggestions to collect the data of devastations.
While the water levels have receded in some regions, a total of 79,389 flood victims are still taking shelters at 166 rescue camps in Bago, Kayin, Mon, Yangon and Thaninthayi areas.
Dr Win Myat Aye also said that the Department of Disaster Management under his ministry has provided over K344 million for relief assistance and water treatment chemicals, while more humanitarian aid will be distributed to the inundated areas.
He also urged to make preparations for data collection on the damages of road networks, bridges, monsoon paddy and other crops.
The deputy ministers from Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, the Transports and Communications, the Electricity and Energy, the Border Affairs, together with the senior officers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Information, the Ministry of Health and Sports, the Ministry of Planning and Finance, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Home Affairs presented their works on the ongoing preliminary data collection and repairing works, the possible supply of machinery from their departments, the healthcare services for flood victims, the recovery of electricity distribution, the fuel supply and the school books for children.
The committee chairman then requested for the reports on allocated budgets and the additional budgets of the relevant departments for the rehabilitation works.
After the meeting, Union Minister Dr Win Myat Aye accepted cash donations of K 5 million from the family of U Than Win Hlaing and Daw Nilar Aung (Thein Tha Yar Gold Shop), K 10 million from the Diocesan Social Action Center (DISAC), AFA, Myanmar social community groups and migrant workers in Phuket, Thailand, for the flood victims in Myanmar.
