In an attempt to curb the spread of coronavirus across the country, all transportation routes including operation of the airlines are halted. The Myanmar National Airlines (MNA) resumed its Yangon-Kawthoung flight and an aircraft carrying passengers will land at Kawthoung Airport this afternoon.
Except people residing in townships in Taninthayi Region, passengers from Yangon will be placed under 21-day quarantine at facility quarantine and one-week home quarantine. In addition, officials from the Department of Public Health and members of the COVID-19 emergency control and prevention committee will conduct medical checks for all passengers, collect their names and ask travel history. If suspected patients with possible coronavirus are found, they will be put under 21-day quarantine at respective facility quarantine.
Although Kawthoung is easily accessible by car from various corners of the country in a safe manner, most people choose air route rather than other transportation means due to time and barriers. Currently, passenger buses from other regions and states are prohibited to operate in Taninthayi Region until 15 May.
The MNA suspended Yangon-Kawthoung flight till 30 April due to COVID-19 pandemic and is planning to resume Yangon-Dawei-Myeik-Kawthoung flight on a daily basis.—Kyaw Soe (Kawthoung)
