THE Ministry for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation received the 2018 survey results on fishery resources and ecosystem in Myanmar.

Union Minister Dr Aung Thu attended the launching ceremony of survey results, held at the Kempinski Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.

At the ceremony, the Union Minister said the requirement of cooperation among relevant state departments, businesspersons, local and foreign NGOs, civil organizations and local people for sustainable development in fishery resources. He also remarked to set up a management system to conserve fishery resources for posterity.

He added that Myanmar is working together with relevant organizations in implementing international conventions such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Myanmar’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), and the objectives for sustainable management and protecting marine and coastal ecosystems.

Norwegian State Secretary Ms. Marianne Hagen and UNFAO Representative in Myanmar Ms Xiaojie Fan extended greetings at the ceremony.

Deputy Director Dr Tun Thein from the Department of Fisheries briefed on the 2018 results, and Dr Jens Otto Krakstad of Institute of Marine Research in Norway explained analysis in scientific approach on the results.

Union Minister Dr Aung Thu received the Results of the 2018 Fishery Resources and Ecosystem Survey in Myanmar presented by the UNFAO Representative in Myanmar Ms Xiaojie Fan.

The recent survey was carried out by the RV Dr Fridtjof Nansen Advanced Research Vessel from Norway under the UNFAO programme. Such surveys were also conducted in Myanmar sea in 1979, 1980, 2013 and 2015.

Recommendations based on the findings will be put into the fishery management plans of the country.

The launching ceremony of survey results was also attended by Union Ministers Lt-Gen Kyaw Swe and Lt-Gen Sein Win, Deputy Minister Dr Ye Myint Swe and officials.—MNA (Translated by Ba Htoo)
