Tribal violence in West Darfur, Sudan, has left at least 83 people dead and 160 wounded.

A local doctors' union said the clashes occurred on Saturday and Sunday in the capital of the state of West Darfur.

The United Nations says nearly 50,000 residents have been displaced following a series of clashes.

Local media have reported that reciprocal attacks took place between Arabs and non-Arabs in the region.

The deadly clashes come after a peacekeeping mission by the United Nations and the African Union had just ended patrol operations at the end of last year.

The mission began in 2007 to address the Darfur conflict, which was described as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

Locals have expressed concern over the withdrawal of the peacekeeping mission, and have staged a rally to call for its extension.
