The Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture has stepped up efforts for submitting a Nomination Dossier to UNESCO for putting the ancient city of MraukU in Rakhine State on the World Heritage list.

“So far, 70 per cent of work on the draft Nomination Dossier has been completed, and it is expected to be ready in July. If we submit the Nomination Dossier to the World Heritage Centre by 30 September, they will come and inspect MraukU next year, and the city could be listed as a World Heritage site by 2021,” said U Kyaw Lwin Oo, the Director-General of the Department of Archaeology, National Museum, and Library, under the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture.

He made the remarks at a coordination meeting on the timely completion of the Nomination Dossier and Management Plan for MraukU yesterday in Nay Pyi Taw.

At the meeting, UNESCO experts Ms. Shikha Jain and Mr. Kai Weise gave a power-point presentation about the designation of MraukU cultural zone, land management, environmental conservation, people management, disaster risk management, tourism management, and exchange of information between groups, which will raise awareness in the city.—MNA
