MYANMAR Sugar and Cane Related Association stated that declining global prices and weak international demand might severely pressure Myanmar’s sugar exports.
Consequently, bearish sentiments can result in a decline in domestic sugar prices.
Myanmar’s annual sugar production is estimated at only 400,000 tonnes according to data as of May of the 2025-2026 Sugarcane Crushing Season. The output showed over a 10 per cent drop compared to that of the previous Sugarcane Crushing Season.
Domestic sugar consumption is annually around 300,000 tonnes. Therefore, 100,000 tonnes are left for export beyond self-sufficiency. Myanmar exported over 90,000 tonnes of sugar in 2025. The association forecasts the possibility of low exports this year, tracking global market conditions.
“Myanmar’s sugar industry might face challenges amidst the market downside to sugar prices. Therefore, the global price drop might influence the domestic sugar market,” a trader shared his observations.
International sugar prices are down by US$50 per tonne from $450 to $400 this year compared with last year,
Sugar producers and traders are heavily relying on domestic consumption and observing the transition as sugar export markets head higher. — TWA/ KK
