MOST youths are showing eagerness to join a maritime career but they are weak in acquiring information on what they should prepare, said Myanmar Seafarer Federation chair, Captain Soe Min Aung.
The Department of Marine Administration has issued guidelines for seafarers and youths can contact MSF if they want to learn, he said.
“Many young men and women are now eager to join the maritime industry. However, we found out that they don’t make sure what they need to prepare to become a seafarer. There are guidelines that a seafarer needs to follow. If they want to choose a seafarer life they will need to learn this vocation. If they don’t do thorough research on this vocation, they will be cheated on making necessary documents and certificates. And if they don’t know thoroughly about skill training courses and travel documents they will cost more. These are cases complained to MSF,” he said.
If a seafarer doesn’t make proper preparations, it is not easy to solve when they get injured or lose their life at work.
“If their travel documents or certificates of completion of the training course are not real, it is difficult to solve when they get into trouble onboard and the employer will deny his responsibilities,” he said. — MT/ZS
