Several persons were feared trapped under the debris of a multi-story building that collapsed in India's northern state of Punjab on Saturday evening, according to a police officer.

The incident occurred in the state's Mohali town.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police and fire teams are at the spot. The reason behind this mishap will be investigated," Senior Superintendent of Police Deepak Pareek told the media.

"One woman has been rescued and sent to a local hospital. Efforts are being made to check if anyone else is buried under the rubble," said an NDRF official.

The building, which housed a gymnasium and a guest house, collapsed while excavation for a new adjacent building was underway, according to media reports.
