Myanmar-Bangladesh border trade declines to $23 mln

THE bilateral border trade between Myanmar and Bangladesh reached US$23 million in the period from 1 October to 21 June in the current financial year, which reflects a decline of $1.3 million compared to the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, as per data from the Commerce Ministry.

 

Border exports between the countries declined by $7.93 million, while imports increased by $6.557 million.

 

During the same period in the 2017-2018FY, border trade between the two nations totalled $24.472 million, with exports worth $23.438 million and imports valued at $1.034 million.

 

Myanmar exports goods to Bangladesh through both maritime and land routes. Border trade between the two countries is conducted through the Sittway and Maungtaw trade camps.

 

In the October-June period, trade through the Maungtaw gate reached $6.152 million, while trade at the Sittway border point was valued at $16.952 million.

 

The products traded between the two countries include bamboos, ginger, peanuts, saltwater prawns and fish, dried plums, garlic, rice, mung beans, blankets, candy, plum jam, footwear, frozen foods, chemicals, leather, jute products, tobacco, plastics, wood, knitwear, and beverages. —Zwe (Translated by Hay Mar)
