Myanmar and Bangladesh have finalized a new trade agreement to enhance agricultural exports from Myanmar to Bangladesh, effective from this year through 2028. The Ministry of Commerce has announced that the two nations are preparing to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to solidify this arrangement.
Under the agreement, Myanmar will export a total of 150,000 metric tonnes of rice and other agricultural goods annually from 2024 to 2028. The export plan includes 15,000 metric tonnes of broken rice, 30,000 metric tonnes of white rice, and 20,000 metric tonnes of parboiled rice.
The deal also encompasses the export of 30,000 metric tonnes of maize, 20,000 metric tonnes of pulses and beans, 20,000 metric tonnes of chili, onions, and ginger, and 15,000 metric tonnes of sugar.
The MoU, which extends the existing rice trade agreement from 2017 to 2027, allows the export of up to 250,000 metric tonnes of white rice and 50,000 metric tonnes of parboiled rice annually. Negotiations are ongoing to increase the export volume to 100,000 metric tonnes in the fourth batch. — ASH/KZL
