The ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) held the 3rd annual meeting of its Advisor Council on Dangerous Drugs, the 3rd AIPACODD Meeting, through videoconference yesterday.


Myanmar parliamentary representatives, led by Pyidaungsu Hluttaw AIPA Joint Committee Chairman U Zaw Thein, joined the meeting where 1st Vice President of the National Assembly of Viet Nam Mdm Tong Thi Phong, and Secretary General the AIPA Ms Nguyen Tuong Van delivered opening remarks.


The representatives of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the ASEAN Senior Officials on Drug Matters also discussed narcotic controlled measures during COVID-19 pandemic and impacts, progress and challenges of the region in this issue, and cross-border drug trafficking and abuses.


The Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs shared their experiences on medical treatments for drug addiction and measures against narcotics.


The members of AIPA also discussed their challenges, progresses and experiences in fighting against illegal drugs.


The meeting also approved the draft document of ‘Turning Words into Actions towards a Drug-free ASEAN Community’ which suggests building capacity and technical assistance for effective handling illegal drug problems locally, internationally and globally amid COVID-19, detailed measures in this issue, cooperation in fighting against cross-border actions, collaboration in sharing knowledge and enhancement of cooperation in the region and with other countries.
