A talk on natural disaster prevention was held at a cyclone shelter in Gawdu Village, Ahmar Township in Ayeyawady Region yesterday morning in conjunction with a natural disaster preparedness drill.

The events were jointly organized by the Department of Disaster Management under the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, the General Administration Department under the Ministry of the Union Government Office, the Myanmar Red Cross Society and the Myanmar Police Force. Firstly, Township Administrator U Thein Zaw and an official from the DDM gave knowledge about natural disasters and elaborated on preventive measures to be taken when natural disasters occur in the region.

Gawdu Village is located close to the sea so local people suffer from natural disaster risks yearly. The government has built a cyclone shelter where residents can take shelter by spending Ks. 150 million. The intention of the drill is to protect local people against natural disasters such as floods, strong winds and landslide, the DDM official added. The officials from the Fire Services Department and the Myanmar Red Cross Society also shared knowledge about emergency issues and first aid activities.
