ACCORDING to Htoo Zoos and Gardens, the Zoological Park Organization (ZPOT) of Thailand and Myanmar’s Htoo Zoos and Gardens jointly organized an Animal Welfare Audit Training Workshop at Nay Pyi Taw Zoological Garden from 24 to 26 June.
The workshop featured a presentation on the important role of animal welfare in zoos and aquariums, along with a detailed talk on ethics and the SEAZA standard code of animal welfare, delivered by experts from Thailand’s Zoological Park Organization (ZPOT), Dr Visit Arsaithamkul and Dr Sumate Kamolonorranath.
At the training workshop, the Animal Welfare Checklist, based on the Southeast Asian Zoos and Aquariums Association (SEAZA) guidelines, was explained in detail. The exhibits were divided among four groups, and inspections were carried out using the SEAZA criteria. Additionally, the findings from each area were presented in a PowerPoint presentation, and each group discussed in detail the support and resources needed for their respective animal areas.
The workshop was attended by the Deputy Director General (Administration Department) of the Forest Department and accompanying officials, the Deputy General Manager and officials from the Myanma Timber Enterprise, faculty from the University of Veterinary Science (Yezin), administrators from various parks, veterinarians, officials from the Htoo Zoos & Gardens Business Unit, as well as animal care supervisors and staff from multiple parks. — ASH/TH
