North Korea's military says it is reviewing an action plan to reenter the demilitarized zone on the border with South Korea.

The General Staff of the Korean People's Army, or KPA, issued a statement via the ruling Workers' Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun and other media on Tuesday.

It says the KPA is studying an action plan for its army to reenter the zone, which was demilitarized under the North-South agreement. It includes plans to turn the frontline into a fortress and further heighten military vigilance against the South.

The statement says the KPA will map out these military action plans and hopes to receive approval to proceed from the Central Military Commission.

The move appears to be part of Pyongyang's efforts to pressure Seoul over leaflets criticizing North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that defectors in the South floated across the border late last month.

Pyongyang also warned last week that it will demolish an inter-Korean liaison office.
