The Tokyo Olympic torch has traveled in central coastal areas of Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Japan that were devastated by the 2011 powerful earthquake and tsunami.
The torch relay's leg in the prefecture began on Saturday. The route for the second day on Sunday covered seven municipalities, many in coastal areas.
In the city of Higashi Matsushima, a lantern lit by the Olympic flame was carried on a train on East Japan Railway's Senseki Line. The line was severely damaged by the tsunami on March 11, 2011 and resumed full operation four years later.
In the town of Matsushima, the flame was put on a pleasure boat for a cruise in Matsushima Bay. The area is known as one of the three most scenic spots in Japan.
The second day of the torch relay ended in Rifu Town, which is home to one of the soccer stadiums for the Tokyo Games.
On Monday, the last day of the event in Miyagi, the torch is passing through five municipalities. They include Natori City's Yuriage district, which sustained extensive damage from the tsunami.
