The opening ceremony of the basic education student sports festival for the 2022-2023 Academic Year (AY) was held at Wunna Theikdi Stadium B in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.

The event was attended by Union Minister for Education Dr Nyunt Pe, Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs U Min Thein Zan, deputy ministers, permanent secretaries, directors-general, deputy permanent secretaries, deputy directors-general, Region/State education officers, sports leaders, coaches and students.

First, Union Minister Dr Nyunt Pe said the sports festival will comprise men’s and women’s events for football, volleyball, athletics, and sepak takraw. Sports is not about only wins and losses, it is about perseverance, patience, skills, strength, unit, respect for regulations and politeness. Achievements in international competitions are expressing unity, dignity and patriotism. Therefore, the athletes of the current events should try hard to become national athletes to uplift the dignity of the country.

The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs led the athletes to compete in ASEAN Student Sports Festival previously. But now, the Ministry of Education will lead for 12th ASEAN Student Sports Festival to be held in the Philippines in 2023 for the first time and so the basic education student sports festivals are being held without fail. The qualified students will be selected to compete in ASEAN Student Sports Festival representing the country.

After the procedures of the ceremony, the Union Minster and party cordially met with the region/state basic education sports groups.
