Japan's foreign ministry says more than 3,600 people at US military facilities in Japan were infected with the coronavirus as of Monday afternoon. Over 60 percent of the cases were in the southern prefecture of Okinawa.

 

The number was reported by foreign ministry officials at a meeting of the Liberal Democratic Party on Tuesday.

 

The officials said 3,638 cases were confirmed at US military facilities nationwide. The cases include 2,302 in US bases in Okinawa. No one was in serious condition.

 

The officials said 362 cases were confirmed at Camp Hansen in Okinawa, 274 at Kadena Air Base, and 227 at Camp Zukeran. They reportedly said they do not know where the 1,151 cases in the prefecture were found.

 

In other prefectures, Iwakuni Air Station in Yamaguchi confirmed 518 cases, the Yokosuka base in Kanagawa reported 245, the Misawa base in Aomori 183, the Atsugi base in Kanagawa 109, the Yokota base in Tokyo 93, and the Sasebo base in Nagasaki 86.

 

The Japanese and US governments have agreed to restrict non-essential outings by US military personnel in Japan.
