FROM January to December 2025, a total of over 6.9 million pilgrims, including monks, nuns and laypeople, visited Shwedagon Pagoda in the Yangon Region to pay homage.
“Over the past year, more than 130,000 monks, over 66,000 nuns, more than 3 million local men and over 3.6 million local women, as well as over 36,000 foreign men and nearly 40,000 foreign women, visited Shwedagon Pagoda, bringing the total number of pilgrims to more than 6.9 million. The number of pilgrims averages at least around 10,000 per day from Monday to Friday, and is higher on government and public holidays,” said U Bo Thin, a member of the Pagoda Board of Trustees.
Currently, due to the increasing number of pilgrims, Shwedagon Pagoda has been open from 4 am to 10 pm. since 21 June 2024, in order to ensure that pilgrims can visit the pagoda in peace and tranquillity. — ASH/MKKS
