Forest Department under Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection is implementing various methods including the Community Monitoring and Reporting System (CMRS) to crack down on illegal logging and trading of forest products in cooperation with the people in the country.
From January 15 to 21 this year, the authorities confiscated a total of 83.29 tons of illegal timbers including 32.46 tons of teak, 16.42 tons of hardwood and 34.41 tons of other types of timber in the country, according to the statistics sent by Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, the State and Regional Forest Departments.
In addition, a total of 18 offenders were charged in connection with the cases, along with the seizure of ten vehicles and machines, according the Forest Department.—MNA
