Pakistan's foreign minister has warned of a serious violation of human rights in the Indian-controlled part of the disputed region of Kashmir and urged the United Nations to launch an international investigation.
Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi made the appeal at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday.
India's government revoked the autonomy of the state of Jammu and Kashmir last month. Pakistan reacted sharply and suspended trade with India.
Qureshi said the Indian government has imposed a curfew and a communication blackout in the region. He warned people's lives are at risk as they face scarcities of food and medical supplies.
He said, "I shudder to mention the word genocide, but I must," and urged the United Nations and the international community to launch an investigation.
India maintains that the issue is a domestic affair.
