THE No 2 Steel Mill (Pangpet) in Taunggyi Township, southern Shan State has been planning to operate three iron foundries to produce pig iron, said Managing Director U Min Thu of the No 1 Heavy Industries Enterprise under the Ministry of Industry.
The No 2 Steel Mill (Pangpet) has been negotiating to sign with foreign experts to operate iron foundries.
Out of 22 foundries including the iron factory under No 2 Steel Mill (Pangpet), 19 were operated on 21 January 2023 and three more are planned to run.
If all workshops under the Steel Mill are fully operational, pig iron can be manufactured. Those pig iron will be sent to No 1 Steel Mill (Myingyan) to produce steel bars. It will fulfil the steel requirement of domestic industrial parks for sure.
No 2 Steel Mill (Pangpet) has been producing over 70 million tonnes of iron ores. The capacity of the mill is estimated at 200,000 tonnes of output. At present, the mill will continue working together with foreign experts for maintenance and operations. — ASH/KK
