A pilot was killed in a light plane crash in a rural area of Western Australia (WA) on Wednesday morning.

Emergency services were called to reports of the crash near the small town of Malabaine, about 90 km northeast of Perth in WA's Wheatbelt region, around 10:50 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

Police said that the pilot, who was the sole occupant of the aircraft, was found by emergency responders and declared dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for the Australian Transport Safety Bureau told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the agency was aware of the incident and has commenced an investigation.
