Rabies vaccination given in Bago

Bago 6 February

People ranging from 70 to 100 were vaccinated against rabies per day in Bago General Hospital. The hospital provided free rabies vaccination to people who were attacked by dogs. Yet the hospital is facing shortage of rabies vaccine beginning November 2018.

The increase in the number of people being attacked by stray dogs called for more vaccines, resulting in the shortage of vaccines. The use of vaccine exceeded the estimated amount by the Ministry of Health and Sports.

However, the regional health supervision committee led by regional minister for social affairs, regional Department of medical services, hospital supportive committee and community leaders appealed donors to provide rabies vaccine. The donors helped the hospital in the free provision of rabies vaccines to those who were bitten by dogs.

According to a report between December 2018 and January 2019, about 1,500 vaccines are used in a month, costing some K 20 million. The hospital has to bear the cost of K 700,000 per day. Therefore, the Bago hospital is asking for donations of rabies vaccine.
