A river bank protection project will start at the end of January in the current financial year at 20 villages in 11 townships of Mandalay Region, according to the Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems, under the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

“The river bank protection project will cost K5.3 billion. Tenders have been invited from private entrepreneurs,” said U Kyaw Myint Than, regional head of the Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems.

“A total of 44 companies submitted tender applications, the closing date of which was 9 January. Last year, some of the activities were carried out by the department. But this year, the department will only supervise the project. The project will be implemented by the companies,” he added.

In the 2019-2020 financial year, the river bank protection project will be implemented in four villages in Thabeikkyin Township, four villages in Singu Township, three villages in Madaya Township, two villages in Ngazun Township, one village in Amarapura Township, one village in Singaing Township, one village in Myittha Township, one village in Tada-U Township, one village in Taungtha Township, one village in Patheingyi Township, and one village in Nyaung-U Township.

The project has been timed with a fall in the level of river water. The department’s engineers will manage the work processes in the project areas. —Than Zaw Min (IPRD)
