PEOPLE living on the river banks with normal influx, where the strength of the soil has decreased, and areas that were severely affected by the earthquake should not neglect the flood risk, said U Hlaing Min Oo, vice-chairman of the Myanmar Social Relief Organization Central Committee.
“As a consequence of the earthquake, many visible cracks in the soil have appeared. They were widespread. Therefore, we urge the people living along the riverside not to neglect the risk of flooding in areas where the soil strength has decreased, and areas that were severely affected by the earthquake,” he said.
The Myanmar Social Relief Organization is working with relevant departments and agencies to respond to natural disasters that occur throughout Myanmar. There have been floods in Upper Myanmar in the past few days, and as the water can enter central Myanmar through the Ayeyawady River, people are urged to be careful.
The organization, with its track record of previous successful rescue operations, has systematically managed rescue equipment donated by various donors and trained the rescuers.
People living around the lower reaches of the Ayeyawady and other rivers are advised to notify relevant agencies as well as nearby social relief organizations, and to evacuate to safe areas for themselves. — MT/ZN
