Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has stressed there will be no talks with the United States unless Washington lifts economic sanctions on his country.

Rouhani made the comment in his address to the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday.

He said Iran will refuse negotiations as long as sanctions continue, and the only possibility for dialogue is for the US to return to the 2015 nuclear agreement.

The remark comes as US President Donald Trump has not ruled out the possibility of meeting with Iran's president.

But despite Rouhani's refusal, he suggested Iran might agree to talks, depending on how the US acts. He said any US demands would have to come with benefits for Iran.
