Seized narcotics worth over $ 642 million incinerated in major cities on int’l day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking

Narcotic drugs worth over 642 million US dollars were burned in Yangon, Mandalay and Taunggyi yesterday, marking the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

 

Some 79 kinds of narcotic drugs and precursor chemicals confiscated this year were destroyed at the ceremonies following the COVID-19 guidelines set by the Ministry of Health.

 

At the drug incineration ceremony in Mandalay attended by member of the State Administration Council Chairman of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Soe Htut and party, a total of 16 narcotic drugs and nine precursor chemicals worth K316.77 billion (over US$ 171.23 million) confiscated from Mandalay Region, Sagaing Region, Kachin State, and upper and middle part of Myanmar were destroyed at the ceremony.

 

The ceremony held in Yangon Region was attended by Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein and party. A total of 26 items of narcotics and seven kinds of precursor chemicals worth over K 356.68 billion (over US$ 192.80 million) confiscated from Yangon Region, Ayeyawady Region, Rakhine State, and the lower parts of Myanmar were destroyed at the ceremony.

 

A similar ceremony held in Taunggyi, Shan State, a total of 18 kinds of narcotics and 40 items of precursor chemicals worth over K 515.36 billion (over US$ 278.57 million) confiscated near Pinson village, Namhu village-tract, Taunggyi Township, Shan State, were destroyed at the ceremony.

 

In accord with the guidance of the Chairman of the State Administration Council, the Tatmadaw, Myanmar Police Force and the Anti-Narcotics Police have stepped up efforts to carry out drug control activities, and large quantities of narcotics and precursor chemicals were seized and destroyed.—MNA
