A SEVERE earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale struck central Myanmar at 12:51:02 pm Myanmar Standard Time on 28 March 2025, causing significant tremors. As a result, local residents suffered injuries and fatalities, and numerous homes and buildings were destroyed. In recognition of these losses and with deep sympathy, the Chairman of the State Administration Council has officially declared a national mourning.

Those in motion paused for one minute in silence and bowed their heads in reverence. Sirens were sounded as a tribute to mourning. Media outlets temporarily suspended broadcasts and displayed mourning logos. Prayers and well-wishes were offered at relevant religious sites, along with the recitation and distribution of protective scriptures and prayers.
With deep sympathy and understanding for the loss of lives and destruction caused by the devastating earthquake, a national mourning period has been designated from 31 March to 4 April 2025, as a time of national remembrance. All citizens of Myanmar are expected to participate with solemn respect and sympathy. Since the occurrence of this tragic event in Myanmar, international organizations, leaders, and individuals have continuously expressed their condolences through messages of sympathy, letters of mourning, and by providing financial aid, essential supplies, and advanced rescue and relief teams to support the affected communities.

Similarly, Myanmar’s rescue teams, military personnel, police officers, volunteers, organizations, and responsible ethnic communities are also participating in rescue efforts under the leadership of the national government. With unity and collective strength, they are facing the ongoing natural disaster with resilience and confidence, working hand in hand to overcome difficulties and challenges.
