TEA leaves in Shwephi Moeluk category are currently fetching high prices in Pinlaung Township of the Danu Self-Administered Zone in southern Shan State, according to local sources.

Tea leaves, a traditional delicacy enjoyed by the Myanmar people and a staple offering at religious and ceremonial events, are extensively cultivated in highland areas of the township.

Villages such as Taungpawgyi, Seekyainn, Htwatni, Myaynitaung and Pamae are reporting the highest yields with farmers cultivating between 10 and 15 acres of tea plants. Many of the tea plantations were planted generations ago, with some now over a century old, boasting large stems and historical value. The resulting high yields are supporting local families’ income and contributing to stronger livelihoods.

Currently, dried Shwephi tea leaves are being sold at prices ranging from K25,000 to K29,000 per viss, while fresh leaves fetch between K5,000 and K7,000 per viss. — Ye Htet Oo (IPRD)/KZL
