MYANMA Railways of Ministry of Transport and Communications brought Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) passenger wagons from Niigata Port, Japan on 21 August 2020 and the ship carrying the wagons arrived at Myanmar International Terminal Thilawa Port on 4 September, according to the Ministry.
The new arrivals are air-conditioners equipped 36 passengers-seated two upper class wagons, and 60 passengers-seated four ordinary class wagons, said authorities.
“The passenger wagons are the very first of its kind to be used in Yangon-Mandalay Railway Improvement Project. The arrival of these passenger wagons could change new and upgraded railway system plus better social-economic development,” said General Manager U Aung Thu Latt of Myanma Railways (Upper Myanmar).
After completion of the Yangon-Mandalay Railway Improvement Project, the new trains with Diesel Electric Multiple Unit passenger wagons could run for 100 km per hour, which is double of current speed and it would last only eight hours of running time from Yangon to Mandalay and vice versa.
The new DEMU train will support passengers to reach their destination on time, to give passengers more comfortable and to transport goods and personal products in time.
