Standoff at Hong Kong Polytechnic University

18 Nov

One of Hong Kong's universities became the latest battleground as police and protesters clashed overnight. Police reportedly stormed a university campus early Monday but later retreated.

Police used tear gas and water cannon at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, while protesters set one of the entrances on fire to block police from getting in.

Some protesters are still hunkering down, with police shutting down surrounding roads in an attempt to bring the situation under control.

Scenes of mayhem played out across the city on Sunday night.

At one point they threw petrol bombs at an armored vehicle that tried to break through.

The standoffs are becoming increasingly violent, with both sides showing no sign of backing down.

Police are now warning it may use live fire after one of its officers was reportedly shot by an arrow.

The past week has seen some of the biggest clashes since the protests began. Last Monday an officer shot a protester at point-blank range, sparking confrontations across the city.

And on Thursday, a 70-year-old man died after being hit by a brick during a clash the previous day.

Schools will remain closed, while some colleges are cancelling classes for the rest of the term.
Local elections remain scheduled for November 24 amid the ongoing civil unrest.
