State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, in her capacity as Chairperson of the Union Peace Dialogue Joint Committee, delivered a speech to the 18th meeting of the committee held at the National Reconciliation and Peace Centre in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning.
The side of government, Hluttaw and Defence Services was represented by the committee’s Vice Chairpersons Union Minister U Kyaw Tint Swe and Dr Tin Myo Win; Union Ministers U Min Thu, U Thant Sin Maung, U Thein Swe, Dr Win Myat Aye, Nai Thet Lwin; Union Attorney General U Tun Tun Oo; retired Lt-Gen Khin Zaw Oo, Lt-Gen Tin Maung Win, Maj-Gen San Myint, Maj-Gen Soe Naing Oo, Brig-Gen Ye Yint Win, Director General U Zaw Htay and U Hla Maung Shwe.
The side of Ethnic Armed Organization was represented by UPDJC Vice Chairman Dr Salai Lian Hmung Sakhong, Sao Sai Ngin, U Myo Win, Pado Saw Tar Doh Hmu, Saw Mra Yarzar Linn, Khun Myint Tun, Nai Aung Min, Saw Sein Win, Saw Kyaw Myint, Kyar Sal Mon, Mi Suu Pwint, Dr Sai Oo, Saw Smith Daun, Khaing Linn Khaing and Nai Aung Ma Ngae.
The political group was represented by Vice Chairman of Committee U Thu Wai, U Naing Ngan Linn, U Myint Soe, Sai Kyaw Nyunt, Tar Hla Pe, U Thein Tun, Dr Aung Myat Oo, U Oo Hla Saw, Khun Tun Shwe, U Zam Zamon, U Shwe Min, Dr Tu Jar, Nai Tala Nyi, Daw Yin Yin May and Saw Tun Aung Myint.
State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi made an opening remark at the meeting. After the speech of State Counsellor, Vice-Chairman Dr Salai Lian Hmung Sakhong of UPDJC talked about objectives and responsibilities of his committee to supervise political dialogues at various levels for ending the 70-year long internal armed conflict and the two major tasks of UPDJC was to achieve internal peace and to build up a Union based on democracy and federalism.
He also emphasized the necessity of coordination in security to end the conflicts.
He clarified that the UPDJC was not a government to address the problems of politics, economy and social affairs, its Union Peace Conference— 21st Century Panlong Conference was not a parliament to pass the laws and its peace dialogues are not a place for public complaints.
Dr Salai Lian Hmung Sakhong added resolutions from the meeting could pave the way for holding the Union Peace Conference— 21st Century Panlong Conference in the first four months of 2020 to fulfill the expectations of all nationals.
Vice Chairman U Thu Wai explained the crucial tasks of UPDJC to build up a Democratic Federal Union as the committee could make some progress in peace-making efforts.
Attendees then discussed the process of peace-dialogue arranged by UPDJC.
Vice Chairmen of the committee U Thu Wai and Dr Salai Lian Hmung Sakhong made their concluding remarks on the discussions and on the success of the meeting which can help future peace dialogues.
The State Counsellor finally expressed her appreciations for the success of meeting, and advised the need for firm determinations on implementing peace resolutions made at the meetings.
She also applauded the remarks of the two vice chairmen of the committee to focus on peacemaking efforts that play a crucial role to end the internal conflicts of more than 70 years. —MNA (Translated by Aung Khin)
