A man chased by police has detonated a bomb in Cairo, Egypt, killing two police officers.

The suicide bombing took place on Monday in central Cairo, home to the popular tourist destination Al-Azhar Mosque as well as a bustling market. Several others related to the military were injured.

The interior ministry said the bomber was being pursued by police as the suspected perpetrator of an attempted attack last week on a checkpoint in Giza, the site of the Pyramids.

In December, four people, including Vietnamese tourists, were killed in a bombing in Giza. Sporadic attacks have also occurred targeting the military, and the government is boosting security.
