SWRR Minister meets UNHCR Director of Bureau for Asia and Pacific

UNION MINISTER for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement (SWRR) Dr Win Myat Aye who was attending the 70th plenary session of the Executive Committee (ExCom) of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva, Switzerland met with UNHCR Director of the Bureau for Asia and the Pacific Mr Indrika Ratwatte at UN office in Geneva yesterday morning.

 

At the meeting matters relating UNHCR’s wish to cooperate in increasing its Quick Impact Project (QIP) works in Rakhine State; providing education, health care and job opportunity for displaced persons in Rakhine State and to provide freedom of movement; providing accurate information to displaced persons in camps in Bangladesh, Cox Bazar where they are having concerns about returning; conducting repatriation in village wise or in group of nearby villages for the repatriation process to be successful and to ease the process; importance of distributing and sharing accurate information speedily in Cox Bazar and to include representatives from Rakhine State in conducting such works on the ground; and the status and resources from ASEAN countries Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia available to assist in repatriation were discussed.

 

In addition to this detailed discussion with UNHCR Resident Representative in Myanmar on future work programme of resettling displaced persons according to national strategy on resettling IDPs and closing down temporary camps in States and Regions where there were displaced persons; status of displaced persons to Bangladesh returning on their own volition and arrangement; status of works on resettling displaced persons in Kachin State conducted by a group led by SWRR Deputy Minister; required programmes to successfully conduct returning of displaced persons; and cooperating according to memorandum of understanding was also conducted.
