ACCORDING to the regional Department of Agriculture, a total of 1,874 acres of lowland coffee (Robusta) that is marketable in international markets were added this year in Taninthayi Region.
The coffee plantation acres reached 3,022 in the 2024-2025 financial year, up from 1,148 acres in the 2023-2024 FY. Coffee plantations cover 470 acres in Dawei District, 1,200 in Myeik, 845 in Bokpyin and 507 in Kawthoung. As of November, 53 acres can be harvested, with an estimated production of 6,760 visses (127 visses per acre). Last year’s output was 43,386 viss from 290 acres.
Robusta thrives in regions around the equator so it is suitable for Taninthayi Region. They can be harvested during four to five years of cultivation. The harvest season is from December to January. Myanmar exports coffee beans to foreign markets,” said an official of the department.
Coffee is grown between perennial crops (rubber and betel plants) under an intercropping system. The department provides seedlings and technical assistance to growers to help increase their income, create jobs for locals and enhance the socioeconomic status of the community. — Myint Oo/KK
