Chaungzon 12 December
A team from Japan arrived in Munine Village, Chaungzon Township in Mon State on 11 December to fan out the remains of Japanese troops killed in the latter stages of the Second World War.
An expert team led by Mr. Atsushi Hurano were accompanied by First Secretary from Japanese Embassy in Yangon Mr. Wataru Suzuki, Deputy Director of the Department of Archaeology, National Museum and Library under the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture Daw Aye Mi Sein.
An estimated 6,100 Japanese troops died in during the conflict and the remains of 1,500 have been taken to Japan during the first search and recovery work. They will be carrying out investigations and recovery efforts for the remains of about 4,600 Japanese soldiers killed in the fighting, representing the Japanese government, said a Japanese expert.
They asked questions to the village administrator, Kyaik Munine pagoda board of trustees and some elderly people what they wanted to know and paid homage to the pagoda.—KA (Chaungzon)
